Belgrade man sentenced for illegal firearm possession

A Belgrade man who pleaded guilty last November of illegally possessing a pistol was convicted in Montana district on Tuesday, according to a media release from the US Attorney’s Office.

23-year-old Ruben Francisco Federico has been sentenced to 15 months in prison and three years of custody release, US lawyer Leif Johnson said.

Prosecutors alleged in court documents that in July 2020, a sheriff’s deputy paced Federico – a convicted criminal under state supervision – who drove 109 mph in a 65-mile zone in Gallatin County. Federico was stopped after a brief pursuit and found in possession of a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

Federico pleaded guilty to a banned person in possession of a firearm on November 10, 2020. His previous crime conviction came from 2018.

The US District Judge Dana L. Christensen presided over the conviction. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Montana Department of Corrections Probation Service, and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau are investigating the case.
