Biden to make ‘large, bold adjustments’ to guns through executive motion, aide says
Guns policy in America will face “big, bold changes” when Joe Biden is inaugurated in January, according to one of the alleged president-elect’s top advisors last week.
Stef Feldman, the national political director for Biden’s presidential campaign, said the former vice president would take action to combat gun violence if the Democrats fail to take control of the Senate, the Washington Examiner reported.
During a Zoom briefing hosted December 3 by the Georgetown University Department of Politics and Public Services, Feldman said Biden plans to “make big, bold changes through executive action, not just police and climate, as we talked about before, but also in relation to health care and gun violence education, on a number of subjects. “
Feldman said Biden will implement changes to guns quickly and will even prioritize the issue on his list of top executive orders.
“There’s really a lot you can do through guidance and executive action,” she said.
Last year, Biden told CNN’s Anderson Cooper he was backing a federal gun buyback program to get guns off the streets. Biden also said he supports universal background checks, adding that “offensive weapons” should be illegal. Period.”
When asked about gun owners’ concerns that he would take away people’s firearms, Biden said, “Bingo! You’re right when you have an offensive weapon. “
“Right now there is no legal way I know where you could deny the right if you bought them legally,” Biden told CNN. “But we can actually go to great lengths to get them off the streets and out of human possession.”
Biden is trying to reclassify the modern sporting rifle so that it falls under the National Firearms Act of 1934, treating weapons like the AR15 in the same way as short barrel rifles and machine guns.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the move would force owners to be put on a federal list, file fingerprints and photos, notify law enforcement officers and wait over nine months for approval, and pay a $ 200 tax .
Biden also plans to reduce gun supplies and limit the number of firearms an American can buy to one per month, the Biden-Harris website says.
Proponents of the second amendment have spoken out loudly against Biden’s proposed gun control measures. In August, the National Rifle Association warned gun owners, tweeted, “If Joe Biden wins, he will destroy our second amendment and America will be unrecognizable.”
