KOTA BARU, March 25 – A 29-year-old police officer at the Meranti Police Station, Pasir Mas, accidentally shot himself in the leg at the end of his shift yesterday while unloading his gun.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said the policeman’s semi-automatic pistol suddenly went off and the bullet pierced his left thigh.
He said the policeman is now in stable condition and is currently being treated here at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZII).
“Based on the report received, the incident occurred at 11:42 pm when the policeman in question had finished his criminal investigation and was about to hand over his weapon to the armory.
“During the process of unloading the gun, the staff at the front counter suddenly heard a loud explosion. They stormed in and saw the bloodied victim on the left thigh and suspected that he shot himself, ”he said.
He told reporters after holding the 214th National Police Day celebration here at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today.
Shafien said the initial investigation revealed that when the cartridge case was removed from the pistol, a shot was suddenly accidentally fired.
“The officer received initial treatment at Pasir Mas Hospital before being referred to HRPZII for further treatment and is now in stable condition,” he said, adding that further investigations are ongoing. – Bernama
