Coroner: Teen died of gunshot wound | Crime & Courts
Orangeburg County Coroner Office has identified the teenager who was killed on Fair Street early Tuesday morning.
Nacarieo Hughes, 16, of Parkside Boulevard in Orangeburg, died of a gunshot wound, according to Sean Fogle, assistant medical examiner for Orangeburg County.
The Coroner Office and Orangeburg Department of Public Safety are continuing their investigation into Hughes’ death.
According to a heavily edited ODPS incident report, a SC Highway Patrol soldier reported gunshots in the area of Fair and Amelia Streets just before 2 a.m.
An ODPS officer was driving down Fair Street and found Hughes’ body on the street.
Hughes had a Glock pistol near his right hand, the report said.

The report also said officers spoke to a man on the scene who allegedly said, “I was trying to protect my mother.”
The man’s mother said she reported to the location after someone told her that the report said her son had a gun.
She said her son had a gun when she arrived, the report said. He got into her car.
While speaking with her son, the report said they saw “a person walking up and down the street several times.”
