‘Glock Rockin’ Beats’ summer camp

Music Generation Mayo and Music Generation Sligo have teamed up for the first time to launch a new interactive summer camp for children ages 7-12 from July 26-30.

At ‘Glock Rockin’ Beats’, children learn the glockenspiel and compose a new piece with top Irish percussionists Alex Petcu and John Rousseau. This will culminate in a joint workshop and the world premiere of the new composition in autumn.

The camp will be a first opportunity for young people in Mayo to receive lessons in this fun instrument. The cost for the week is € 50, including the purchase of the carillon. Camp runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Zoom and the kids are divided into smaller groups to work on their play and composition skills.

The glockenspiel is a cheerful instrument with a bright, pure sound similar to a xylophone. It’s easy to learn and has a set of tuned metal keys that are struck with mallets.

Starting out with the glockenspiel can help improve future instrumental learning by developing pitch recognition, hand-eye coordination, and rhythm. Learning to play an instrument has been shown to promote the development of young minds, strengthen memory and reduce stress. Glockenspiel is the German for glockenspiel. It can be recognized in popular music like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”.
