Learn safe handling and hunting with modern sporting rifles
Modern sport and AR-15 rifles have become very popular with firearm enthusiasts. While these new rifles are capable tools in knowledgeable hands, they also present some unique challenges that responsible shooters seek to overcome.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a free online course titled Introducing Modern Sports Rifles on Tuesday, September 22nd, from 6pm to 7pm
“These firearms have become increasingly popular and many people are starting to hunt with them,” said Ted Coburn, assistant director of the Outdoor Education Center at the MDC August A. Busch shooting range in Defiance. “AR-15 rifles can be a little more complicated to operate than some shooters are used to using more traditional firearms.”
This virtual class is presented by employees of the Busch Shooting Range and teaches the basics of modern sport rifles. It covers the basics of setting iron sights and zeroing riflescopes. safe loading, unloading and duty cycle. The program will also examine the parts and controls of the rifle, as well as routine care and cleaning. “We will also discuss the different calibers this weapon can be used in,” added Coburn.
The participants then learn how to use the modern sport rifle for hunting. There are some specific considerations that are covered in the class in order for users to be able to use an AR-15 rifle as a safe and effective hunting tool.
Introduction to Modern Sporting Rifles is a free virtual program for all ages. However, an extended online registration is required at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Z2c.
