Letter: Extremists on both sides might be purchasing firearms | Letters to the editor
In EJ Dionne’s February 23 column, he implored the “reasonable among us to take control of the arms debate.” He went on to explain his use of the term “gun imperialists” to refer to those who are not adhering to his position on gun safety, which is not gun safety, but a further erosion of our rights under the Second Amendment. Dionne focused his rhetoric on the far-right extreme but neglected to mention the violence and intimidation we saw mostly in Portland, Oregon and Seattle over the past year.
The FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System processed a record number of controls in 2020. The National Shooting Sports Foundation estimated that approximately 8.4 million background checks were performed on first-time gun purchases in 2020. In my opinion, these people likely represented both sides of the political spectrum.
It is also very likely that many of these purchases were for military-style firearms, a scary-looking, semi-automatic modern day sporting rifle. Indeed, Dionne should take note, as the number of extremists, as he calls them, is increasing and they are concerned about the ongoing assault on their rights under the Second Amendment.
