New Delhi:

A 23-year-old man involved in over 25 robbery and kidnapping cases was arrested after a brief exchange of fire, police said on Sunday.

The shooting took place in the Lado Sarai area of southern Delhi. The defendant Akash alias Chavanni was classified as an “active bad character” by the Malviya Nagar police station.

Police claimed that both sides fired four shots.

Senior Police Officer (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah said Akash was arrested after his team received information that he would be coming to the Lado Sarai area late Thursday evening to meet one of his contacts about a robbery in the area to commit. Akash was cornered by police and asked to surrender, but he pulled out his pistol and shot team members, he said, adding that the team also fired back in self-defense.

“The defendant sustained injuries to both legs during the shooting. He was overpowered and disarmed by the police, who then took him to Safdarjung Hospital, where his condition is stable,” he said.

Akash and his staff have been wanted in 15 kidnapping cases that have only occurred in the past three months in Delhi’s southern and southeastern areas, the DCP said.

He has also been implicated in robbery cases, police said.

Police said they recovered a semi-automatic pistol and three live cartridges from Akash along with a motorcycle he was using.
