HOLLY HILL — The former financial officer at a local roofing company was arrested at his new job Wednesday morning after police say he swiped more than $150,000 from his former boss.
Holly Hill Police Chief Stephen Aldrich said in an email that his officers arrested Matthew James Littlemore, 36, just before 10 am Wednesday at his new job at SCCY Firearms in Daytona Beach. Until March 2, police say he worked as the chief financial officer for R&R Industries at 500 Carswell Ave. and had been making unauthorized purchases with the company’s credit card.
R&R Industries hired Littlemore in October 2016, the charging affidavit states, flying him and his family from California to Holly Hill and offering to pay temporarily for a condominium. Littlemore oversaw the company finances and was allowed to use a company credit card to make only business related purchases authorized by the CEO, the affidavit states.
According to the report, Littlemore paid himself bonuses from November 2017 to the last week he worked, and handed out bonuses to other staff members back in December.
“He was paying his house rent, house utilities, medical insurance premiums, medical expenses and other personal expenses” with a company debit card, the records state.
According to the affidavit, the reason the losses weren’t discovered during Littlemore’s employment was that Guy Beasley, CEO of R&R Industries, had entrusted Littlemore with all the company’s finances.
“Little more even convinced Mr. Beasley to do away with his CPA and tax specialist since he could handle all the financial duties,” records state.
Documents state that Beasley asked Littlemore to resign after noting poor performance.
Beasley said he called the police shortly after discovering the $150,693 loss.
“This is an extremely serious charge,” Beasley said by phone in a prepared statement. “As soon as we discovered the irregularities we went directly to the Holly Hill Police Department.”
The roofing and ventilation systems contractor has been in business since 1948, according to the company’s website.
Aldrich said in an email that authorities have frozen Littlemore’s account.
Police charged Littlemore with grand theft of more than $100,000 and he was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on $150,000 bail, according to Aldrich.
