‘I believe in miracles’ – Stabroek News

'I believe in miracles' - Stabroek News

Dear Editor,

I am not a fanatical churchgoer, but I believe in miracles.
It is a miracle that more Guyanese do not die on our roads.
It is a miracle that there aren’t more accidents on our roads, given the number of vehicles that use the roads and the way we Guyanese drive.
It is a miracle that there aren’t more accidents at night when there are no traffic policemen or radar and more speeding takes place.
It is a miracle that there aren’t more accidents with pedal cyclists, even though they ride at night without a light or reflectors and are not bothered by traffic lights or the police.
It is a miracle that there is no difficulty finding the Aquatic Center even though the sign is at the exit and not at the entrance.
It is a miracle that vehicles towing 20ft and 40ft containers are allowed to use any roadway at any time without restriction.
It is a miracle that drivers can see faded ‘No Entry’ signs that are painted on the road surface and there is no sign at eye level.
It is a miracle that more Guyanese don’t die having used drugs with no English on either the primary or secondary container (in spite of the National Bureau of Standards).
It is a miracle that there aren’t more Taurus firearms in Guyana (officially), when we have a virtual open border with the Taurus manufacturer.
Well, Editor, I daresay that I will have to continue believing in miracles.

yours faithfully,
CE Houston
