READ – In response to recent gun violence incidents in the city of Reading, the Reading Police Department launched Operation Cease Fire, an initiative that includes enforcement actions specifically against gun crimes.

“We act with the utmost urgency to achieve results and will continue to work towards the ultimate goal: safe roads and safe neighborhoods,” said Mayor Eddie Morán.

“I recommend to the police chief and his team that they proactively combat gun violence and work diligently to make Reading a place where we can all live, learn, work and play safely.”

In the first two weeks since its inception, the Reading Police Department, supported by the Berks County Detectives, Berks County Probation Office, and PA State Police, arrested 12 people for crime and other violations and confiscated 12 firearms. The firearms seized include seven 9mm pistols, two AR15 rifles, a shotgun and several hundred rounds of ammunition.

“This program uses the strategies recently presented by the administration to combat and reduce crime,” said chief executive Richard Tornielli. “Our trained officers continue to use the best intelligence-gathering tools to remove as many illegally used firearms as possible from our streets and neighborhoods. We will continue to act aggressively against gun violence in Reading through strategic partnerships with local, state and federal partners. “
