A person with a rifle tried to steal a parked car early Tuesday, but fled in another vehicle and led police on a chase to the west side of Detroit, eluding officers.
A resident in the 28000 block of Couzens called police about 5 am to report a vehicle theft in progress, said Madison Heights police Lt. Kevin Barrett.
He would not disclose the gender of the resident, but said the person reported someone wearing a mask and carrying a rifle was trying to steal a 2014 Dodge Charger.
Dodge Chargers and Challengers are among the most commonly stolen vehicles in the US, according to motorbiscuit.com.
The would-be thief Tuesday never made contact with the person who called police, Barrett said.
“The suspect fled the scene without the car prior to our officers’ arrival,” he said.
The masked person with the rifle got into another vehicle, possibly driven by another person, Barrett said.
An officer on patrol spotted the suspected getaway vehicle, described as a dark colored Dodge Charger.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle on Dequindre Road north of 11 Mile Road, Barrett said, but the driver would not stop.
Police said the chase continued as the speed of the fleeing vehicle increased.
“The pursuit continued to the west side of Detroit before the officer lost sight of the vehicle and they were unable to locate it again,” Barret said. “Nobody was injured and the resident wasn’t confronted by the (resident), but still that’s scary business.”
Madison Heights police had several similar incidents in December 2021, Barrett said, where car thieves armed with guns stole parked vehicles, Barrett said.
“It was happening through the metro Detroit region,” he said. “It was unknown if it was the same crew and we never got a suspect.”
One of those earlier incidents happened Dec. 13, 2021.

Madison Heights police were called to the 28700 block of Couzens about 5:15 am on a report of two masked men – one of them with a gun – who tried to steal a Dodge Durango.
The homeowner’s security surveillance caught the two men on camera and showed one of them with an AR-15 style pistol, apparently providing cover as the other man unsuccessfully tried to steal the Durango.
The homeowner got a motion alert on the surveillance camera and looked outside, spotting the pair before calling the police.
