SALEM — Officers pursued a man reported to have committed an assault into the Marc’s parking lot Thursday.

Police Chief JT Panezott said that the department received a report of a man assaulting a woman outside of the hospital. While officers were en route the caller reported that the man involved got into a vehicle and fled east on East State Street before pulling into the Marc’s parking lot. When officers arrived, they initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and asked the man to exit the vehicle. During the stop the man attempted to pull away from officers, and was taken to the ground as a result before being taken into custody, according to Panezott.

During the arrest of the man informed officers that he had a firearm on his person and in his vehicle. Officers recovered a Glock 9-millimeter in a case around the man’s neck and an AR-15 with a loaded 60 round clip in the trunk of his vehicle. During the arrest of a possible controlled substance was also found on his person. The firearms and substance were turned over to the department’s officer on the Columbiana County Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Panezott said the man had been charged with assault, obstructing official business and resisting arrest with potential additional charges pending lab results.

The man’s name could not be confirmed as of Thursday evening.
