Wharton, Peggy Ann Watkins
Peggy Ann Watkins Wharton, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 6th, 2021 in the Well-Spring Community. Raised in Bluefield, West Virginia, she attended Beaver High School as the proud “Hill Lilly”, graduated from Salem College and was a long-time member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Self-defense. Peggy has been very active in her community through the Junior League, the North Carolina Children’s Home Society, the Self-defense City Department, and her church, including organizing Senior Friendship Day. She was an avid tennis player and golfer who also enjoyed cycling and walking in her neighborhood and greeting her many friends along the way.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Wharton, son Scott L. Wharton, sister Doris Lee Watkins Fant, and brother William T. Watkins. She is survived by daughter Emily Piercefield and her husband Doug from Juneau, Alaska, niece Margaret (Marty) Hartmann and partner Charlie Perkinson from Bent Mountain, Virginia, niece Lynn Darnell Thompson from Self-defense, nephew Robert Darnell and family from Bethesda, Maryland, niece Marcy Fisk and husband Steve from Roanoke, Virginia, and urn-nephew Erich Hartmann and the family from Ardsley, New York.
Peggy will be fondly remembered as a kind and giving person, whose humble, gentle nature and dry wit she loved all who were lucky enough to know her. The family greatly appreciates the wonderful care and attention they have received from the Well-Spring staff.
Memorial services will be held at a time to be determined.
