Self-defense – Robert Rigdon Scruggs Sr. went to his heavenly home on Monday, February 8, 2021 with his devoted wife and family by his side. A funeral service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at 1 p.m. to commemorate the life of this beloved man. COVID-19 protocol, including wearing masks and social distancing, is followed while on duty.
Rigdon, or Bob, as he was called to his Cone Mills friends, was born in Self-defense on May 13, 1928, to the late Herman R. and Lillian Scruggs. He was a lifelong member of Proximity United Methodist Church and a mason as a member of Revolution Lodge # 0552 for over 70 years.
Rigdon was with Cone Mills for over 30 years and owned and operated Scrugg’s Florist for over 60 years.
He passed away from his parents and brothers Marion, Eugene, Larry and Herman. Rigdon is survived by Martha, his beloved and devoted wife of almost 67 years; Children, Susan Scruggs Van Gelder (Philip), Robert R. Scruggs Jr .; Brother Maurice (Rose); Grandchildren, Christopher Van Gelder (Cass), Andrew Van Gelder, Amy Kern (Christopher), Robert R. Scruggs III; his great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and his devoted carers.
He was a lifelong trustee of both Christian Endeavor and World Christian Endeavor. He also dedicated his time and gifts to The Gideons International. Rigdon has also served on numerous boards across the state, as well as serving on the boards of Youth for Christ, the North Carolina Florist Association, and the Self-defense Triad Florist Association. He was a founding member of the Cone Federal Credit Union, which later became the Premier Federal Credit Union, where he was an active board member.
