Ocasio-Cortez‘s Stunning Ignorance of Federal Gun Laws on Display

USA – (AmmoLand.com) – The ignorance of Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shows again. Their latest gaffe proclaims, “Guns are not allowed in the District of Columbia …” in a CNN interview with Chris Cuomo, brother of Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is also no stranger to gun control.

That could come as a shock to gun owners living in the District of Columbia. It could also come as a shock to the only federal firearms licensee – DC Security Associates. For that matter, someone might want to explain this to the police department themselves that became them sole licensee for a short time.

Legislators, know the laws

Even so, this confusion does not make Rep. Ocasio-Cortez right. The District of Columbia’s attempt to refuse arms within the District failed miserably. That led to the milestone rather The ruling that upheld the second amendment is an individual right and local authorities cannot ban entire classes of firearms in common ownership. Before the fall, Washington DC had banned the possession of handguns. In subsequent litigation, the federal courts ordered the district to issue licenses to transport firearms to qualified, law-abiding citizens.

This ended DC’s ban on handguns. In fact, more than 4,000 people have been given concealed carry permits from the DC Police Department that require hours of instruction and range certification. According to a Washington Post, more than half of that last fiscal year was for residents outside of the district Report.

This could end the discussion of whether it is lawful to exercise fundamental rights in the federal enclave where elected representatives of the nation meet. However, that did not end Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s ignorance of the law.

Clasp pearls

The Congresswoman made the completely wrong remark when explaining why she was not attending President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She said she didn’t feel safe since there were other members of Congress claim their right to keep and carry weapons. She might have been confused here.

The possession of firearms within the Capitol Hill complex is prohibited to all except members of Congress and law enforcement agencies. While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Tosses up metal detectors and puts U.S. Representatives down every time they go to the Chamber to cast their votes, that notion that members of Congress cannot have guns is a shit.

The last time this was in 2015, when Congressman Ken Buck (R-Colo.) Took all appropriate steps to hang a modern American flagged sporting rifle (MSR) in his Capitol Hill office. It was unloaded, the bolt removed and deactivated with a trigger lock. Gun control politicians clutched their pearls and screamed that such an atrocity could not be tolerated. Only that it works.

“Members of Congress can store firearms within the confines of their office.” explained Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the Capitol Hill Police Department, “and you and any member of staff or agent of a member of Congress may move firearms unloaded and securely packaged within the Capitol Ground.”

The same rule also states that no one may “carry a firearm in the chamber or on the floor of any of the houses, in an adjacent lobby or cloakroom, in the galleries of a house, or in the marble room of the Senate or in the Rayburn room of the house, unless it has not been assigned or approved by the two Sergeants of Arms to maintain reasonable security. “

Just so we can make it easy to understand … Guns are legal in Washington, DC, and members of Congress can have guns in their offices. The rules passed by the House of Representatives prohibit them on the floor of the chamber of the house, in the respective lobbies and in the cloakroom or in certain rooms.

Blinded by bias

This is not the first time Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s ignorance of federal firearms laws has been fully displayed. She accused fellow Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) of “lending firearms to unsupervised people who cannot pass a background check”. In the same Tweet, She accused friends of Rep. Crenshaw of “likely molesting their spouse or keeping a violent criminal record, and you may not know”.

If Congressman Ocasio-Cortez took the time to understand the constitution she has sworn to defend, or the laws she seeks to understand and advance, she would know it is one crime knowingly transferring a weapon to a prohibited person. This includes domestic offenders.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s comments botching gun laws and constitutional rights started with feeling unsafe and claiming many other members of Congress agreed with her. She didn’t offer any other names and didn’t even try to put a number on it. She willingly ignored the fact that, for safety reasons, that is precisely why more than 8.4 million people bought a gun for the first time last year, among the 21 million background checks for a gun sale.

MP Ocasio-Cortez has sponsored 29 bills and amendments. None of their bills passed the House of Representatives, which was controlled by their fellow Democrats. Only two of their amendments were accepted, one by vote and one by vote. One courtesy she would like to consider on behalf of the people she chose would be to understand the laws before attempting to destroy them.
