Paterson man arrested with loaded handgun after fleeing police and falling

A town man allegedly in possession of a gun tried unsuccessfully to escape from police on Market Street late Saturday night.

Dariel Mercedes, 25, was charged with gun crimes and resisting arrest.

Mercedes was among a group of people on a porch on the corner of Market Street and Pennington Street, an area that has seen a surge in gunfire around 10:50 p.m. in recent weeks

Detectives got out of their vehicles and informed the group that they were approaching to issue regulation violations.

Mercedes fled east on Market Street from the porch, with the police behind them. He ignored orders to stop. He lost his footing and fell. A Ruger .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol fell off his clothes and slid across the sidewalk, police said.

Mercedes tried to flee again but was arrested. He is being held in Passaic County Jail pending a hearing.

Detectives Brian Culmone and Mohammed Bashir successfully made the arrest.
