Paterson Police Seize Loaded Handgun, Shotgun Blocks Apart
Paterson Police seized a pair of loaded guns barely an hour and a dozen blocks apart.
Uniformed officers and detectives Yamil Pimienta and Mohammad Bashir approached about 15 people who were drinking and playing loud music near several double-parked vehicles on Lawrence Street outside Montgomery Park just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.
A man in the crowd identified as town resident Rodney Alston, 25, turned away from the detectives and stuffed a 9mm SCCY pistol into the front pocket of his hoodie, Speziale said.
Alston was arrested and taken to Passaic County Jail to await a first appearance in the Central Judicial Processing Court on gun charges.
It was just over an hour earlier when Detectives William Hermann and Mustafa Dombayci responded to a call from someone carrying a gun in the 16th Avenue and East 18th Street area.
Officers, along with Emergency Response Team officer James Iandoli, did not find a suspect, Speziale said, but they did discover a duffel bag with a loaded 12-gauge pump-action shotgun.
The serial number was scratched off, he said.
An investigation continued.
Both weapons have since been sent to the New Jersey State Police Ballistics Laboratory for further investigation, Speziale said.
