Cordless ratchets aren’t new to the market and this isn’t Ryobi’s first rodeo with them. The 1/4 “and 3/8” extended reach ratchets feature One + HP brushless technology that provides 40 ft-lbs and 55 ft-lbs of torque, respectively. This is a significant leap in performance from the previous PRC018 short shaft model at 30 ft-lbs and more on some of the best wireless ratchets on the market.

The speeds are also a little different. The 1/4-inch model runs at up to 260 rpm and the 3/8-inch model is a little slower at 230 rpm.

Pro tip: Cordless ratchets are very different from impact wrenches and have a much lower torque. They are designed to help you adjust a fastener without over tightening it. Once set, you can pull the ratchet like a hand ratchet to apply more torque (if necessary).

Handle and trigger design

The handle and metal paddle trigger design are pretty similar to traditional pneumatic ratchets. This is an important design feature in case you need to twist the handle to move the battery to a different angle. We were able to operate the trigger without any problems, no matter in which direction we had to turn the tool.

The trigger still has variable speed so feel free to move it while removing screws or try to avoid over-tightening.

However, the handle is a bit larger to accommodate the post-style battery. If your hands are on the smaller side, you might not care about the diameter. However, the rubber coating on the handle offers additional slip resistance and comfort.

Head design

The extended reach and slim head make it easy to access tight spaces that were traditionally reserved for more compact hand tools. If you look at the two options side by side, the 3/8 inch ratchet head is about 1/4 inch wider than the 1/4 inch drive ratchet.

Drive options

There are four locking positions every 90 ° and the operator works at any angle even when it is unlocked. To make the adjustment, pull the collet upwards below the shaft and turn it in the desired direction. It slips in as soon as it touches the catch.

Setting pliers

While it’s a minor thing, the fact that the forward / reverse switch is flush with the head means you can get in a little closer.

Additional functions

  • Dual LED lights
  • Lock switch

Ryobi cordless ratchet with extended range price

This Ryobi 3/8 inch extended range ratchet is available from The Home Depot for $ 159 as a tool only and $ 199 with a powerful 2.0Ah battery and charger.

The extended-reach 1/4-inch Ryobi ratchet costs $ 169 as a mere tool, and like the 3/8-inch model, a kit option is also available. You can get one of these for $ 209 at your local Home Depot.

The kits are a little hard to come by as they are so cheap so keep your eyes peeled. Ryobi accompanies its ratchets with a 3-year manufacturer’s guarantee.

The bottom line

When it comes to performance, the wireless Ryobi 18V One + extended range ratchets are exactly where they are needed. We have nothing to complain about from a professional point of view.

The challenge is dealing with the battery and the Ryobi design team did a good job turning your head and giving it a variable speed paddle trigger that you can turn in your hand and still operate easily. Overall, both versions of this cordless ratchet are a huge asset for Ryobi users who spend time under the hood.
