Shooting Sports USA | What’s In Your Range Bag, Kristen Hemphill?

Texas Christian University rifleman Kristen Hemphill made a name for herself in college shooting after winning the 2019 NCAA Air Rifle Individual National Championship as a freshman. In 2020, she received the first-team NRA All-American award in both air rifle and smallbore. Find out what Hemphill has in her range bag.

Tell us how you started in competitive shooting.
When I was nine years old, my father piqued my interest in shooting. He encouraged me to take part in the 4-H shooting program. After my first shoot with a rifle, I was hooked.

Please share some of your most important shooting performances with us.
In 2018 I won a silver medal for a small bore rifle at the Suhl World Championship. That same year, I received another silver medal for smallbore at the World Championships in Changwon, South Korea.

Some of my fondest memories come from the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships. I was the NCAA National Individual Air Rifle Champion, and my rifle team – the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University – won the National Team Championship. I also finished sixth for Individuals in the USA Shooting Air Rifle Olympic Trials selection game last year.

What firearms and other equipment do you use for the competition?
For air rifles I shoot an LG400 Walther and for smallbore I use a KK500 Walther. In high school, I was active in various sports. My basketball coach passed away in 2016, and in his memory I have a sticker with his name on my air rifle. He’s always been very supportive of my shooting career and wanted me to do great things. I know he would be proud of where I am today.

Tell us about your range bag and what you carry in it besides your firearms.

I use an LL Bean travel bag as a range bag. It’s made of a flexible, lightweight material that I can use to attach all of my shooting equipment, as well as extra clothing when I need it. Plus, everything stays below the £ 50 air travel limit. Inside, I always have extra TSA locks in case one breaks on the trip, extra tools and gun parts to secure my guns, and extra copies of important documents like my passport and gun permits for trips abroad.

What are you doing in your spare time?
The little free time I have as a college athlete is spent with the rest of my teammates. They are like sisters to me and they always know how to make a stressful day better.

Any tips for new shooters?
For those new to shooting, I strongly recommend investing in good equipment. Then practice, practice and practice some more. It takes a long time to master this sport as everyone strives for perfection at the higher levels. To reach this level, it is best to spend time with yourself and your weapon to advance your shooting career.
