The Shamokin Dam man fled police after being arrested in a stolen vehicle

Nov. 25 – A man from Shamokin Dam is in jail after state police said he fled soldiers and led them in a car chase on Tuesday.

Justin Cruz, 22, of Susquehanna Trail, is being jailed on $ 40,000 bail after appearing before Shamokin District Judge John Gembic on Wednesday night.

Soldiers said they had received information that three vehicles were stolen from Dirt Cheap Cars in Selinsgrove around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Soldiers said they stopped behind one of the vehicles reported missing, a blue Nissan Xtrerra, according to court documents.

When the soldier tried to run over the vehicle, the driver sped off on Sunbury’s Fourth Street and eventually turned right on Walnut Street before passing through stop signs and eventually crashing into a power pole near Purdy Street, which shared Police with.

Two men left the vehicle and escaped on foot, the police said.

A soldier chased the passenger of the vehicle who was later identified as Cruz. Police said they saw Cruz reach into his waistband and drop a gun, police said.

The soldier ordered Cruz to stop, but the man did not listen and continued to flee, police said.

When the soldier pulled out his electronic weapon, Cruz went down before shots were fired. He also told the officer that he had a pair of brass knuckles with him, the police said.

A firearm was found and identified as a 9mm Taurus pistol with an extended magazine containing four 9mm bullets, police said.

Troopers also discovered a key to a second vehicle that was reported stolen by Dirt Cheap Cars.

Cruz is now charged with aviation crimes to avoid arrest, stolen property and firearms that cannot be carried without a license.
