  • Three heavily armed robbers were shot dead by police in Durban.
  • The men were “armed to the teeth,” said the police.
  • They have also been found with traditional muthi who “made them believe they were invincible”.

Three heavily armed suspects, believed by police to be part of a band of robbers, were killed Tuesday after a shooting in Pinetown, Durban.

The police confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

“These thugs were armed to the teeth and the fact that they had traditional muthi with them made them believe they were invincible,” said incumbent provincial commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya.

Police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said police from the provincial K9 unit were tracking information on a white Ford Ranger believed to be the vehicle used in a spate of armed robbery in the greater Durban area.

“At 7:00 pm, they spotted the vehicle in Pinetown and tried to overtake it. The suspects tried to escape while shooting at the police officers. The police followed them, and the suspects eventually lost control of their vehicle and fell on Josiah into a Gumede Road garage.

“Six suspects got out of the vehicle and engaged in a firefight with police officers and officers from a security company who also responded. One police officer was injured when he was hit in the arm and chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he was in stable condition remains. “

Tyron Powell, director of Marshall Security, was also shot dead during the shooting. According to Marshall security officers, Powell was taken to Crompton Hospital, where he was stabilized and has since been moved to another hospital for further treatment.

“The suspect armed with the rifle was shot dead on site. Three suspects fled in their vehicle. Members of our Special Operations Team and SAPS tracked the suspects, who opened fire on them, and they returned fire, killing three other suspects.

“Three handguns and an AR15 assault rifle were recovered from the scene. There may be other suspects pending,” the security officials said in a statement.

Powell is currently in the hospital, recovering from surgery from the gunshot wound. He is in a stable condition.

Naicker said the Pinetown police are investigating cases of attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and have also opened an investigation report.

“Detectives believe this gang has been linked to a series of robberies in the greater Durban area.”

Gonya wished the injured policeman a speedy recovery.
