LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. – A person was arrested Tuesday after a traffic obstruction resulted in the discovery of alcohol and a Glock pistol in a vehicle, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office reported.

At 12:37 a.m. on March 2, a captain from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office was driving west on Springland Avenue when he noticed a vehicle traveling east on Springland Avenue had a four-way stop sign ignored.

The captain initiated a traffic obstruction on Springland Avenue near Karwick Road.

A Michigan City Police Department officer and his K-9 partner came to assist the La Porte County captain on the ground.

The K-9 was instructed to sniff the car and alerted officers to an odor, officials said.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a Glock pistol and a partially consumed alcoholic beverage, officials reported.

The driver of the vehicle, 37-year-old Michigan City’s Branden Hewlett, was arrested and taken to the Michigan City Police Department while officers continued operations while the investigation was intoxicated.

Hewlett was then taken to La Porte County Jail and faces the following preliminary charges, officials said:

  • Carrying a pistol without a license (with prior conviction)
  • Operation during the noise, class A offense
  • Operation while in the noise, Class C offense

Hewlett is on a $ 15,305 cash only bond.
