What does AR mean?

Over the years there has been a misunderstanding of what “AR” stands for in AR-15, with many believing that it means “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle”.

However, the real meaning of “AR” is initialed after the company that developed the weapon, ArmaLite Rifle.

The AR-15 assault rifle was first developed as a military rifle by ArmaLite Rifle in the late 1950s, but had limited success in selling the weapon.

In 1959, the company sold the design to Colt – a firearms manufacturer.

For more than half a century, the AR-15 has been popular with gun owners and widely used in gun stores across the United States.

Despite its popularity among gun enthusiasts, the AR-15 was used in many of the country’s worst mass shootings.

Over the years there has been talk among lawmakers about the widespread availability of the assault rifle and how easily a person can get their hands on it.

An AR-15 can cost less than $ 1,000, although they are customizable and cost in the thousands of dollars.

The National Rifle Association estimates that there are approximately eight million AR-15s and their variations in circulation.

Has it been used in other mass shootings?

AR-15 rifles have been used in the last 80 mass shootings in the U.S. – more than a quarter, including the March 22 shooting in Boulder, Colorado.

According to a Newsweek analysis, a semi-automatic rifle has been used in 21 mass shootings in the past decade.

The first assault rifle used in a mass shooting came in 2007 in Crandon, Wisconsin.

On October 7, 2007, 20-year-old Tyler James Peterson shot dead six people and seriously killed a seventh before committing suicide at a semi-detached party in Crandon, Wisconsin, after returning home.

What did Biden say about assault weapons?

On March 23, President Joe Biden called for gun control laws to be tightened following the mass shootings in Boulder and Atlanta.

On March 16, “sex addict” Robert Aaron Long, 21, shot and killed eight people – seven women, six of whom were Asian – in three massage parlors in Atlanta.

The president called on the Senate to pass two gun control bills to extend the background check for private and online sales – and gun display purchases – that the House of Representatives passed in early March.

“Less than a week after the horrific murders of eight people and the attack on the AAPI community in Georgia while the flag was still flying at half-staff for the tragedy, another American city was marked by gun violence and the resulting trauma.

“And I hate to say it because we say it so often, my heart is beating – our hearts are unsure for the survivors who flee for their lives and who hid in fear that they would ever see their families or their friends again, “said Biden.

According to an affidavit released on March 23, Alissa allegedly bought the assault rifle six days before the shooting.

After holding a press conference this afternoon, Biden tweeted, “We can ban offensive weapons and high capacity magazines.

“We can fill in gaps in our weapon background verification system. This is not a partisan problem – it is an American problem that will save lives. Congress must act. “

“I don’t have to wait a minute – or an hour – to take sensible steps that will save lives in the future,” he told reporters minutes earlier. “We should also ban offensive weapons.”

President Biden had tabled plans to combat gun violence during his 2020 campaign, including a proposal to ban offensive weapons, enforce stricter background checks, and end online firearms and ammunition sales.

Biden’s proposal aims to:

  • Ban on the import, manufacture and sale of high capacity magazines. The ban is designed to prevent gun manufacturers from breaking the law by making minor changes that don’t limit the gun’s lethality.
  • Reduce stockpiling of weapons. The Democrat supports a law that limits the number of weapons a person can legally use to only one person per month.

  • Require background checks for all gun sales. Biden would enact a universal background check law with few exceptions such as gifts between close family members. This would close the so-called “gun show and online sales loophole” that Biden and President Barack Obama narrowed during their tenure.
  • Stop selling firearms and ammunition online. The former vice president plans to pass a law banning the online sale of guns, ammunition, kits and gun parts.
  • Close the hate crime loophole. Biden would forbid anyone “convicted of a misdemeanor of hate crimes or given an increased penalty for an offense because of hatred or prejudice on his commission” from buying or possessing a weapon.
